A while back we had a reader write us about Morning Moo Milk – it was being discontinued at Costco, and she wanted our help to try and bring it back! We posted it and had some great conversation about Morning Moo, apparently there are a number of you that love it! I don’t know if we’ve succeeded in bringing it back to Costco yet, BUT – we did come to the attention of Augason Farms, who owns Morning Moo. They contacted us about doing a review and a giveaway of their product and we, of course, were eager to give it a try!
Morning Moo is a dehyrdated milk alternate. You can find it in #10 cans at Walmart now (yeah!), there are both chocolate and regular versions. It has a 25 year shelf life, which makes it great to have around even if it’s not what you drink on a daily basis. Nichole and I are big advocates of having some type of food storage in your home, so that if you ever have need of it you’re covered. If you have little kids around (some adults I know too…), milk is a big “comfort” food. The kids would go crazy if I didn’t have milk, so I feel good knowing I have a backup plan around for when I don’t have fresh milk.
Here is a little info about Morning Moo:
· Morning Moo’s Dry Milk Alternate is comparable to 2% milk.
· It has all the vitamins and nutritional value with 40% less lactose.
· It is a blend of dairy and non dairy ingredients – the dairy is whey and the non-dairy is the creamer.
· It is a non-instant milk.
· It can be used for baking
· One #10 can will prepare 5-5 1/2 gallons. Instant requires more to make the same quantity.
· We do have a 100%Country Fresh Milk. It has the “Real” logo on it so you know it is ALL dairy. One #10 can will prepare 2 ½ gallons of Milk
In taste tests by an independent group, Morning Moo was ranked the best dry milk product out there – which seems to be a conclusion supported by the fans I’ve encountered! Here’s a great description of it I found online:
Morning Moo is a Grade A, sweet whey based milk substitute that can be used wherever milk is used. With an amazingly good taste, most people like Morning Moo better than regular powdered milk. In fact, it tastes much more like the whole milk you purchase in the grocery store than regular or instant powdered milk. Part of the reason for this is the manufacturer found a way of blending vegetable oil into the product so the reconstituted Moo is in a perfect, non-separating solution, just like the fat in homogenized milk. This helps give Morning Moo an amazingly rich flavor that non-fat milk just can’t attain. Not long ago I had a glass of whole (3.4% butterfat) milk after being totally accustomed to the taste of skim milk. My thoughts echoed one of our customer’s comments. She was also a skim milk drinker. “The stuff was so rich, it tasted like coffee creamer,” she said. To a person accustomed to drinking skim milk, Morning Moo is incredibly rich in the same way that whole milk seems rich.
One of the big questions we get about Morning Moo concerns it’s nutritional qualities compared to powdered milk. Morning Moo only contains half the calcium of powdered milk but on the plus side is loaded with Vitamin A. A cup of reconstituted Morning Moo contains 25% of the RDA of this vitamin. As vitamin A is one of the more difficult vitamins to get from your food storage, having Morning Moo on hand is an excellent way of getting this nutrient. Morning Moo is also fortified with Vitamin D. Except for the lower calcium content in Morning Moo, this drink has equal or better nutrition than powdered milk.
I tried out both the regular and the chocolate on the kids – they drank it up, it was a hit. I think it tasted better after being chilled, although I have heard that it makes a good hot chocolate too. So it probably depends on personal taste!
