This week we have a fun giveaway, open to our Anchorage area readers. A few weeks ago we were contacted about a “Crafters Smackdown” that’s going to be happening here in Anchorage on the 14th. What on earth are we talking about, you say?!
Here’s some info, from the group, about this event:
The event is a raucous, one-day, sudden-death crafting melee that involves teams, a jocular host, bribable judges and entertainment. There are ringers, timed rounds and unsportsmanlike activities. Bottom line is that this event is fun, and a great break from the dark days of February in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Crafters Smackdown is a sudden-death crafting competition that features heats of timed craft challenges. We provide the junk and tools – you provide the absurdly named teams and registration fee. Teams are eliminated after each round. Judges consider creativity, presentation and bribe quaily in selection of the Smack-down champions!
The end result, besides the champions’ bragging rights and hideous trophies, is that the wonderful programs at the Congregation Beth Sholom Joy Greisen Jewish Education Center, a non-profit organization, are supported. The preschool, which serves Anchorage children ages 6 months to five years old, is a program unlike any other. Our diverse families come from all over the Anchorage bowl (and from as far as Willow) so that their children can experience the caring, play-based environment that we offer.
Our after school program, ReCreation, is award-winning. Our children, ages 5 to 15 years, learn art techniques using donated materials. Approximately 40% of their projects “pay it forward” (hand-dyed silk scarves and hand-sewn comfort pillows for breast cancer patients and survivors, handmade teddy bears for children overseas and decorated tote bags for displaced children are but a few of their efforts).
